Expert Systems

Rule-based reasoning from hand-written knowledge — the dominant approach before statistical learning.

An expert system encodes a specialist domain as explicit if-then rules and runs an inference engine over them. In the 1980s these were the commercial face of AI, diagnosing infections and configuring mainframes.

They failed on the knowledge acquisition bottleneck: experts could not write down everything they knew, and the rule bases became impossible to maintain. Their descendants survive anywhere decisions must be auditable — credit policy, tax, compliance.
