Collective problem-solving inspired by ants, birds and other social organisms.
Swarm intelligence studies how simple individuals can collectively produce intelligent behaviour without central control. Each participant follows basic local rules while responding to its neighbours and environment.
Ant colony optimisation and particle swarm optimisation are well-known examples. These methods are used for routing, scheduling, search and optimisation problems where many possible solutions must be explored.
